Spring in Indianapolis arrives with warming temps, melting snow, and — if you’re not careful — a plumbing system that’s had a rough winter. From frozen pipes that slowly reveal their damage to sump pumps that haven’t been tested since last fall, your plumbing quietly accumulates wear all winter long. The good news? A simple spring plumbing maintenance routine can catch problems early, extend the life of your equipment, and keep your home running smoothly through the warmer months ahead.
At Isley Plumbing, we’ve been helping Indianapolis homeowners protect their plumbing systems for over 110 years — four generations of family expertise. Every spring, our licensed plumbers work through a consistent checklist with customers across Indianapolis, Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville, Westfield, and the surrounding metro area. Here’s what we recommend you do every year as soon as temperatures stabilize.
1. Flush Your Water Heater to Remove Winter Sediment
This is the most overlooked item on most homeowners’ spring maintenance list — and one of the most important. Over the winter, your water heater works overtime to keep up with cold incoming water temperatures. That extra demand accelerates sediment buildup at the bottom of the tank.
Sediment — primarily calcium and magnesium deposits from Indianapolis’s moderately hard water — acts as an insulating layer between the burner and the water. The result: your heater works harder, uses more energy, and wears out faster. You may also notice rumbling or popping sounds coming from the tank, which is hot water pushing through that layer of buildup.
Spring is the perfect time to flush the tank. Connect a garden hose to the drain valve at the base of the tank, run it to a floor drain or outside, then briefly open the valve to flush sediment out. If you haven’t flushed your water heater in more than a year, or if your tank is 8–10+ years old, it may be time to have a professional evaluate whether a flush — or a full replacement — is the right call.

2. Test Your Sump Pump Before Spring Rains Hit
Indianapolis and its northern suburbs — including Westfield, Noblesville, and Zionsville — see significant spring rain. April and May are historically among the wettest months in central Indiana. If your sump pump fails during a heavy rain event, the consequences can be severe: a flooded basement, damaged flooring and drywall, and potential mold growth.
Testing your sump pump takes less than five minutes. Pour a bucket of water slowly into the sump pit and watch the float rise. The pump should activate automatically, drain the water, and shut off cleanly. If it doesn’t start, runs continuously, or makes unusual grinding noises, you have a problem that needs attention now — not during a downpour at midnight.
While you’re at it, inspect the discharge line to make sure it’s clear of debris and that the water is being expelled far enough from your foundation. Also check your battery backup unit (if you have one) — spring storms that knock out power are exactly when you need it most.

3. Reconnect and Inspect Outdoor Faucets and Hose Bibs
If you properly winterized your outdoor faucets last fall — shutting off the indoor supply valve and draining the lines — spring means it’s time to restore service. But don’t just open the valve and assume everything is fine.
Before reconnecting hoses, turn the water supply back on slowly and watch the outdoor faucet closely. Check for dripping at the spigot, any signs of water staining on the exterior wall (which can indicate a leak behind the siding), or water that seeps out near the handle when the faucet is pressurized. Even frost-free hose bibs can develop cracks if water was left in them during a hard freeze.
Also inspect the hoses themselves before connecting them. Rubber hoses degrade over winter, and a cracked hose under pressure can waste hundreds of gallons of water. It’s a small thing, but it adds up.
4. Check for Signs of Winter Pipe Damage
Even if you never experienced a burst pipe this past winter, subtle damage can linger. Water freezes, expands, stresses the pipe, and then thaws — without ever fully rupturing. The result is a hairline crack or a weakened joint that will eventually fail, often at the worst possible time.
Walk through your basement, crawl space, or utility areas and look for:
- Water stains or discoloration on walls, ceilings, or flooring near pipe runs
- Slight corrosion or mineral deposits around fittings (a sign of slow leaking)
- Soft or warped drywall near supply lines
- An unexplained spike in your water bill
- Low pressure at specific fixtures, which can signal a partial blockage or hidden leak
If anything looks suspicious, don’t wait. Small leaks become big leaks, and hidden water damage can lead to mold, structural issues, and costly remediation. Our plumbers serving Indianapolis and the surrounding area are experienced in leak detection and pipe repair.

5. Replace Your Water Filter Cartridges
If you have an under-sink water filter, a whole-home filtration system, or a reverse osmosis unit, spring is an ideal time to swap out filter cartridges. Most manufacturers recommend replacement every 6–12 months depending on usage and water quality. If you last changed filters in the fall, you’re right on schedule.
Indianapolis area water — whether from municipal sources or private wells — can contain elevated levels of chlorine, sediment, iron, or hardness minerals. Over-used filter cartridges stop doing their job and can actually allow contaminants to pass through at higher concentrations than an unfiltered system.
Signs your filter needs changing include:
- A noticeable change in water taste or odor
- Reduced water flow from filtered outlets
- The filter indicator light (if your system has one) is on
- It’s been more than 12 months since the last replacement
Not sure what system you have or which cartridge you need? Isley Plumbing installs and services water filtration systems throughout the Indianapolis metro area. We can assess your current setup and recommend upgrades if your system is no longer adequate for your household’s needs.
6. Inspect Drain Flows Throughout the House
Winter brings a lot of use — holiday gatherings, extra cooking, more time spent indoors. Spring is a good moment to run water in every sink, tub, and shower and observe how quickly each drain flows. Slow drains are often the first sign of partial blockages building up in your pipes, and catching them early is far less expensive than dealing with a full clog or backup.
Pay special attention to kitchen sinks (grease accumulation), bathroom sinks and tubs (hair and soap buildup), and floor drains in the basement or utility room (which can develop slow flow from sediment). A simple drain cleaning now can prevent a much more disruptive backup later in the season.
7. Check Your Water Shutoff Valves
This one takes 30 seconds per valve and is easy to skip — until you have an emergency and can’t shut off the water. Test every accessible shutoff valve in your home: under sinks, behind toilets, at the water heater, and at the main shutoff. Each valve should turn easily and stop water flow completely when closed.
Old ball valves and gate valves that haven’t been turned in years can seize or fail to seal properly when you actually need them. If a valve is stuck or doesn’t fully close, have it replaced before you’re under pressure.
