How to Catch Your Running Toilet

If you’ve ever heard the sound of a toilet running non-stop, you know how frustrating it can be. Not only is the sound annoying, but it can also lead to higher water bills and potential damage to your plumbing. Fortunately, there are several simple steps you can take to catch your running toilet before it becomes a bigger problem and you won’t even need your “running” shoes! In this blog, we’ll go over the most common causes of a running toilet and how to fix them.

Check the Flapper Valve

The flapper valve is located at the bottom of the toilet tank and is responsible for controlling the flow of water into the bowl. If it’s not functioning properly, water can leak out of the tank and into the bowl, causing the toilet to run. To check the flapper valve, remove the tank lid and flush the toilet. Watch the flapper valve as the water drains out of the tank. If it doesn’t close all the way, it’s likely the cause of the running toilet noise.

Adjust the Chain

If the chain that connects the flapper valve to the flush handle is too long, it can prevent the flapper valve from closing completely. To fix this, simply adjust the length of the chain so that there’s enough slack to allow the flapper valve to close tightly.

Replace the Flapper Valve

After checking the flapper valve, if it seems damaged or worn out, it will need to be replaced. Flapper valves are relatively inexpensive and can be found at most hardware stores. Simply turn off the water supply to the toilet, flush the toilet to drain the tank, remove the old flapper valve, and install the new one according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Check the Fill Valve

The fill valve is responsible for refilling the toilet tank with water after it’s been flushed. If it’s not functioning properly, it can cause the toilet to run. To check the fill valve, turn off the water supply to the toilet and flush it to drain the tank. Once the tank is empty, turn the water supply back on and listen for the sound of running water. If the fill valve is faulty, it will need to be replaced.
