Safe, Efficient Gas Leak Detection in Indianapolis & Surrounding Areas

Natural gas is a common way to fuel home appliances. It is both efficient and cost-effective. In addition to heating and cooling systems, natural gas can fuel kitchen appliances, hot water heaters, and fireplaces. While natural gas is considered safe for residential use, the potential for gas leaks does exist. If your home uses natural gas, it’s a good idea to learn the symptoms of a gas leak and what to do if one occurs. If you need leak detection services or gas line repair in Hamilton County, Marion County and Boone County or anywhere in the Northern Indianapolis area, contact your local Westfield gas plumbers at L.E. Signs It's Time to Repair or Replace Your Gas Line

Gas leaks are the most common cause of gas line repairs and replacements. Underground gas lines are often damaged by either being struck by a shovel while digging or through the deterioration of the pipe. Leaks can occur outside the home in the underground pipes, at the gas meter, or inside the home at the connection location of appliances. Many older appliances have a brass connector that secures them to the actual gas line. These connectors can rust or degrade over time, which allows gas to seep into the home. We can replace these brass connectors with coated or stainless steel fittings, which will not degrade. In addition, we can perform annual inspections on underground gas lines that run to outdoor grills, lamps or other buildings to ensure that they haven’t degraded.

Do You Suspect a Gas Leak in Your Home?

Homeowners using natural gas should install carbon monoxide detectors to help alert them to gas leaks.

However, there are several tangible signs of a gas leak that you should be on the lookout for as well:

  • Monitor for a rotten egg or sulfur-like odor in or around the home. This odor is added to natural gas to help alert you to a leak.
  • Look for dead or dying vegetation around gas valves, lines, or meters.
  • Look for dirt or dust blowing up from a hole in the ground. In areas of damp soil, you will see bubbles forming.
  • Listen for a hissing sound coming from gas appliances, lines, or valves.
  • In severe cases, flames may be present at the sign of a gas leak.

What to Do in the Event of a Gas Leak

Gas leaks are serious and potentially life-threatening occurrences, even when they are small. In addition to explosions, the inhalation of carbon monoxide can cause death. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us even if you’re unsure there’s a gas leak in your home. At L.E. Isley & Sons, your safety is our number one priority.

If you think you have a gas leak, following the proper reporting and safety procedures is critical:

  • Leave the home or area immediately. If your home is attached to another home, notify your neighbors of the potential leak as well.
  • Do not turn light switches, electrical devices, or cell phones on or off. Likewise, do not start your vehicle if it is located near the home.
  • Call your local gas company to report the leak.
  • Wait until help arrives to reenter the premises.
