Was England Ahead in the Race to Have Indoor Plumbing?

Yes – it seems so! Those Brits invented and built some of the world’s first plumbing amenities that we still use today!

1596: The first flushing toilet

1767: The first mechanical shower

1848: National Public Health Act

1870: The first modern ceramic toilet

Seems the USA had a few “firsts” for our national plumbing history as well:

1855: Citywide sewer system established in Chicago

1930: Standardized plumbing codes

1952: First plastic and PVC pipes used

1978: Water conservation laws created

If you want to dig into the real archives back to BC, check out these first plumbing adopters:

2500 BC: Copper pipes first used in Egypt

1700 BC: Oldest outdoor flushing-style toilet in Crete

500 BC: Aqueducts, baths, and fountains were built and used in Rome
